John de Gruchy is a Emeritus Professor in Christian Studies at the University of Cape Town and an Extraordinary Professor in theology at the University of Stellenbosch. He has a doctorate in theology, and another in the social sciences, along with several honorary doctorates. He has lectured in many countries and authored or edited more than thirty books and many journal articles. With his wife Isobel, he is now a resident member of the Volmoed Community for Reconciliation and Healing near Hermanus where he writes, gives seminars and makes furniture. Amongst his books are Christianity, Art and Social Transformation; Reconciliation: Restoring Justice; Being Human: Icons as a Means of Grace; Confessions of a Christian Humanist: and John Calvin: Christian Humanist & Evangelical Reformer; and Being Led into Mystery: Faith seeking answers in life and death. An autobiography, I Have Come a Long Way, was published in 2015, and a book of reflections entitled Without Apology in 2016. His books have been translated into German. Korean, Japanese and Swedish.
