Niki Daly was born in June 1946 in Cape Town. There, he was schooled and completed his tertiary education at the Cape Town Technikon earning a Diploma in Art and Design. His interest in music took him to London on contract with CBS recording company. Later, he swapped music for illustration and his first published book, The Little Girl who Lived down the Road (1978) was awarded a British Arts Council award for illustration. He continued to write and illustrate children’s books while earning a living as a design teacher. In 1996 he was appointed Head of Design at the Dept. of Fine Arts, Stellenbosch University. Over the past 38 years, his books have won international acclaim, many winning awards for writing and illustration. He has worked as a publisher, lecturer and run writer’s workshops including those for the Maskew Miller Longman novel competitions. His latest picture books, ‘Surprise! Surprise!’ will be published in South Africa, Britain and Spain in 2017.
