Philippus Hugo obtained the degrees BMus, BMus Hons and MMus (cum laude) in piano at the University of Stellenbosch under supervision of Juliana de Villiers. At the age of 16 he made his solo debut with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) and as a student, he performed a number of times with the CPO, the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra.
In 1992 he was appointed the official accompanist at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre. After five years he accepted a post as music teacher at Rustenburg Primary School and in 2001 he was appointed as accompanist at the University of Stellenbosch where he still works.

Since 1994 he has been one of the official accompanists for the Absa National Competition for High School Learners (nowadays the Artscape Competition) and a frequent accompanist for the Sanlam Primary School Competition (now the Samro Competition), ATKV-Muziq, and the Unisa Overseas Music Scholarship Competition as well as freelance accompanist at various national arts festivals such as Klein Karoo Klassique (KKK), Darling Voorkamerfest and the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All festival.
In 2011 he was asked to perform with the American singers Kennethia Mitchell and Lawrence Craig Jr at the Maputo International Music Festival. Philippus was again invited to perform as guest artist during the Maputo Classical Music Season in May 2014.
During the 2012 and 2013 KKK in Oudtshoorn, he performed in various productions. For the opening concert of the 2013 KKK, Philippus, together with Minette du Toit-Pearce and the US Percussion Duo, was nominated for a Fiësta award for the Best Classical Concert at a National Arts Festival. He was also asked to perform as official accompanist for the ATKV-Muziqanto National Vocal Competition and he is still officially involved with Muziqanto. He was also invited to partake in the Harare Music Festival in Zimbabwe.
Since 2013 he compiled programs for certain concerts that the winners of the ATKV-Muziq and ATKV-Muziqanto must perform as winners of these classical music competitions. These include the gala concerts at the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All festival, the opening concerts at the KKK festival, a performance at the 2014 Woordfees, a 2014 Oude Libertas concert, a number of Nederburg and La Motte concerts, as well as concerts for Classic FM in Sandton, Johannesburg. Philippus was approached by Unisa to act as examiner. He acted as adjudicator at the George Loerie Eisteddfod and at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod. He is also an accomplished chef and co-owner of the restaurant, Driefontein in Caledon in the Overberg.
